Under my direction, the BMCC Jazz Ensemble participated in multiple WBGO Jazz Appreciation Month programs. The most recent was recorded at Yamaha Artist Services as part of WBGO’s annual celebration highlighting the next generation of musicians in the jazz world.
The BMCC Jazz Ensemble was the only CUNY group represented in the sessions, which focused on college ensembles. Over the past years, BMCC’s participation has placed our students alongside ensembles from NYU, The Juilliard School, and other nationally recognized programs. In addition to recording music for the radio broadcast, BMCC students also participated in short interviews for WBGO’s social media channels, where they had the opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives on jazz. This collaboration offered students valuable professional exposure and hands-on practice working in a real recording and broadcasting studio environment. Beyond the direct educational benefits, the project also amplified BMCC’s presence to a broader audience, highlighting the talent of its students and strengthening the college’s visibility within the wider community.
